Down on the rock farm: This Saturday, while you're trolling the West Palm Beach Greenmarket for veggies and fancy cheese, check out an animated guy named Farmer Jason. He can't help you with tomatoes or mushrooms, but he'll be happy to rock out some farm-fresh, family-friendly jams for you. And he does at least sing about corn, cows and a guitar-picking chicken.
The good farmer, appearing at the Greenmarket as well as kids' rock festival Jamarama Live on Saturday at Pompano Beach Amphitheatre, is the "identical twin brother" of Nashville roots rocker Jason Ringenberg - you might remember his band, Jason and the Scorchers. Farmer Jason was born a few years back when Rocker Jason wanted to create some music that his young daughters could enjoy while he was out on the road, as well as to make kids music that parents wouldn't mind listening to repeatedly.
"I had young children myself, and I was listening to a lot of children's music," says Farmer Jason, who shares the stage with Buck Howdy, Milkshake and LazyTown. "I figured if I had to listen to this music all day long, it was gonna be mine.... I wanted the musicianship and the playing to be something that adults could appreciate on the new record (Rockin' In The Forest With Farmer Jason).
Both that one and the first album, Down On The Farm With Farmer Jason, are great, even for those of us with no children to use as excuses for jamming to a song called A Finger Picking Chicken.
JAMARAMA - Featuring: Milkshake, Farmer Jason, Miffy, Buck Howdy and Mymo the Monkey, 1 p.m. Saturday at the Pompano Beach Amphitheatre, 1806 N.E. Sixth St., Pompano Beach. Tickets: $25. Phone: (561) 966-3309. Farmer Jason also appears from 9-10:30 a.m. Saturday at the West Palm Beach Greenmarket.
